Understanding Justification
How do Romans Catholics and the early Reformers differ in their view of justification? Why is one's understanding of justification so important?
Understanding Justification – It seems significant that the key component of this discussion revolves around “one’s understanding of justification.” Without a grasp of the essence of what biblical justification entails then we will get messed up from the get go. Justification is the ONLY avenue for restoration of the severed relationship between God and man that occurred as a result of Adam’s sin (Rom. 5:12). In fact it is ONLY the Divine, forensic act of God, contingent on the finished work of Jesus Christ upon the cross, and confirmed by the resurrection, that satisfies the Holiness characteristic of God. As the righteousness of Christ, via the substituted penalty of death, is imputed to a believer based on faith alone, both the justice of God and the mercy of God are equally evident. Nevertheless the “faith alone” aspect remains a stumbling block to this day. The tension is apparently rooted amid misunderstandings that there are distinct differences between justification and sanctification for a believer.
